ICTP-SAIFR in Physics World

In April, the magazine Physics World published a special report on Physics in Brazil. The report includes a feature article entitled "São Paulo realizes Salam´s dream" about ICTP-SAIFR and its role as the first overseas offshoot of the ICTP-Trieste.

New hiring at ICTP-SAIFR

Following the recommendation of an international search committee, a Simons-Fapesp tenure-track fellowship was offered to and accepted by Rafael Porto. Currently working at the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) in Hamburg and the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) in Princeton, Dr. Porto is a renowned researcher in applications of Effective Field Theory in the field of Cosmology.
New member of the ICTP-SAIFR staff

In May, Jandira Oliveira was hired as the new executive manager of ICTP-SAIFR. Her activities include the coordination of scientific activities and administrative support to the other members of the staff. Minischool on Dynamical Systems in Biology

The Minischool on Dynamical Systems in Biology was held at ICTP-SAIFR from May 4-9 and was organized by Marcus A.M. de Aguiar (UNICAMP) and Nathan Berkovits (IFT-UNESP/ICTP-SAIFR). The courses discussed applications of the theory of dynamical systems to leading-edge problems of biology such as the learning of bird-song and the evolution of species.
II Workshop on Perspectives in Nonperturbative QCD

Organized by Gastão Krein (IFT-UNESP), the second version of this Workshop on QCD was held at ICTP-SAIFR on May 12 and 13. There were 11 invited speakers who discussed current research on various topics in nonperturbative QCD.

Colloquium of Craig Roberts

On May 14, Prof. Craig D. Roberts (Argonne National Laboratory, USA) presented a colloquium entitled "Calories for Quarks: The origin of mass". Prof. Roberts is the head of the Theory group of Argonne National Laboratory since 2001 and received the Helmholtz International Fellow Award in 2012 for his research on Quantum Chromodynamics.

New FAPESP postdoctoral fellow

In April, Luana Pedroza (ICTP-SAIFR/IFT-UNESP) was awarded a FAPESP postdoctoral fellowship by ICTP-SAIFR in the field of condensed matter theory. Her research project aims to use density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the out-of-equilibrium dynamics at the interface of liquids and solids.

Visits of Kavli and Fields Institute Vice-Directors

The ICTP-SAIFR received visits from Prof. Greg Huber (Vice-Director of the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics in Santa Barbara) and Prof. Matheus Grasselli (Vice-Director of the Fields Institute in Toronto). In addition to discussing the various functions of their institutes with the ICTP-SAIFR director and vice-director, Prof. Huber presented a seminar on April 14 entitled "Geometry of an Intracellular Membrane" and Prof. Grasselli presented a seminar on May 30 entitled "Dynamical Systems and Financial Instability".
