Announcement of Joint School and Masters Program with Perimeter Institute

Applications are open here for a new joint school and masters program between IFT-UNESP/ICTP-SAIFR and the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics. Students in the last year of their undergraduate studies will be selected to the joint masters program through an annual school and exam held every July, and will spend one year at IFT-UNESP/ICTP-SAIFR and one year at the world-famous Perimeter Scholars International (PSI) masters program in Waterloo, Canada. The application deadline is May 1, 2016.

ICTP-SAIFR Visiting Professor Pedro Vieira

From March - October of 2016, Prof. Pedro Vieira is visiting ICTP-SAIFR and helping to coordinate the new ICTP-SAIFR agreement with the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics (Waterloo, Canada). Prof. Vieira holds the Clay Riddell Paul Dirac Chair in Theoretical Physics at Perimeter Institute and was recently awarded the 2015 Gribov Medal for his work on integrability and gauge theory.

V Southern-Summer School on Mathematical Biology

The fifth edition of the Southern-Summer School on Mathematical Biology was held at ICTP-SAIFR from January 4 - 10. Lectures given by Prof, Roberto Kraenkel (IFT-UNESP) covered the basics of population biology and were supplemented with modelling exercises and group projects addressing problems in ecology, epidemiology and evolution.

School on Physics Application in Biology

From January 11 - 29, the three-week School on Physics Application in Biology took place at ICTP-SAIFR with lectures on various topics on the interface of physics and biology by Profs. V. Balasubramanian (UPenn), W. Bialek (Princeton), E. Bodenschatz (Max Planck), U. Dieckmann (IIASA), S. Leibler (IAS/Rockefeller), G. Mindlin (Buenos Aires), J. Pacheco (Minho), F. Santos (Lisboa) and G. Stolovitsky (IBM).

Roundtable on Physics-Biology Interactions in South America

On January 21, a roundtable on Physics-Biology Interactions in South America was organized by ICTP-SAIFR as part of the 3-week School on Physics Applications in Biology. Presentations by Carlos H. Brito Cruz (FAPESP scientific director), Silvina P. Dawson (U. Buenos Aires), Roland Koberle (USP-São Carlos) and José Nelson Onuchic (Rice U.) were followed by an open discussion session with the audience.

2016 Meeting of Scientific Council and Steering Committee

The ICTP-SAIFR Steering Committee, composed of Profs. F. Quevedo (ICTP-Trieste director), J. Durigan (UNESP rector), C. Brito Cruz (FAPESP scientific director), J. Palis (Brasil Acad. of Sci. president), and J. Maldacena (rep. from South America), met on Feb. 1-2 with its Scientific Council of ten distinguished physicists chaired by Prof. P. Goddard (IAS Princeton), to discuss future directions for the center and select the 2017 scientific activities.

Three Seminars on High-Energy Physics

On February 2, three distinguished physicists on the ICTP-SAIFR Scientific Council presented research seminars on high-energy physics entitled "Particle Physics Beyond the Higgs" (Marcela Carena - Fermilab/ U.Chicago), "Rattle and Shine by Compact Binary Mergers" (Luis Lehner - Perimeter) and "Cosmology after Planck" (Matias Zaldarriaga - IAS Princeton).

LIGO Announcement of Gravitational Waves

On February 11, the LIGO Scientific Collaboration announced the first detection of gravitational waves at a press conference streamed live at the IFT-UNESP auditorium. Riccardo Sturani, a member of LIGO and an ICTP-SAIFR/IFT-UNESP researcher, presented a short talk at the press conference as well as a public lecture on February 18 .

Special Seminar of Robert Brandenberger

On February 19, Prof. Robert Brandenberger (McGill Univ.) presented a seminar entitled "Cosmological fluctuations in an AdS/CFT cosmology" in which he discussed applications of AdS/CFT to study the early universe. Prof. Brandenberger developed the theory of string gas cosmology and has received numerous awards including the CAP-CRM Prize In Theoretical And Mathematical Physics in 2011.

Joint ICTP-Trieste/ICTP-SAIFR Advanced School on Regional Climate Modeling over South America

From Feb. 15-19 the Advanced School on Regional Climate Modeling over South America was organized as an external activity of ICTP-Trieste in collaboration with ICTP-SAIFR. Through a series of lectures and hands-on practical tutorial sessions, this activity provided a background on regional climate modeling studies focused on the South American region.

School on Effective Field Theory Across Length Scales

The School on Effective Field Theory Across Length Scales was held at ICTP-SAIFR from Feb. 22 - March 4 and organized by Profs. U. van Kolck (IPN Orsay and U. Arizona), G. Krein (IFT-UNESP) and R. Porto (IFT-UNESP & ICTP-SAIFR). The school provided an overview of the general concepts underlying the construction of an EFT, illustrating these concepts through concrete applications in different areas of physics.
