ICTP-SAIFR 5th Anniversary Symposium: Advancement of Science in South America

On November 6-8, 2016, ICTP-SAIFR will celebrate its 5th anniversary with a symposium of public talks, research seminars and roundtable discussions with the participation of its Steering Committee and Scientific Council, its 60 Associated Members from South America, and several invited distinguished speakers and panelists.

Workshop on Next Generation Quantum Materials

The Workshop on Next Generation Quantum Materials was held at ICTP-SAIFR from April 4 - 8 and organized by L. Arrachea (ICAS, Buenos Aires), R. Martin (Stanford U.), E. Miranda (UNICAMP) and R. Wentzcovitch (U. Minnesota). Topics in the workshop included superconductivity, quantum magnetism, strongly correlated materials, electronic structure and topological systems.

New member of the ICTP-SAIFR staff

In April, Lucas Santos Sanches was hired as the new computer systems manager of ICTP-SAIFR. In addition to being responsible for the ICTP-SAIFR webpage and online applications, he will supervise the audiovisual recording and computer laboratory for ICTP-SAIFR activities and provide technical support to all ICTP-SAIFR researchers and visitors.

Workshop on Magnetic Fields in Hadron Physics

The Workshop on Magnetic Fields in Hadron Physics was held at ICTP-SAIFR from May 9 - 13 and was organized by A. Ayala (UNAM, Mexico), G. Krein (IFT-UNESP), M. Loewe (PUC, Chile) and C. Villavicencio (UBB, Chile). The workshop discussed the role played by magnetic fields in hadron dynamics considering scenarios such as peripheral heavy ion collisions and compact astrophysical objects.

School on Fundamental Aspects of String Theory

The School on Fundamental Aspects of String Theory was held at ICTP-SAIFR from May 23 - 30 and organized by N. Berkovits (ICTP-SAIFR/IFT-UNESP) and Carmen Núñez (U. Buenos Aires). Profs. R. Gopakumar (ICTS-Bangalore), K. Narain (ICTP-Trieste), M. Schnabl (AS CR-Prague), A. Sen (Harish-Chandra RI) and B. Zwiebach (MIT) covered advanced topics including superstring field theory, double field theory, topological strings, and duality symmetries.

Colloquium of Ashoke Sen

On May 25, Prof. Ashoke Sen (Harish-Chandra Research Institute, India) presented a colloquium entitled "Ultraviolet and Infrared divergences in string theory" in which he explained how string theory avoids the divergences present in other formulations of quantum gravity. Prof. Sen has received several important prizes for his contributions to string theory including the Dirac Medal (2014) and the Fundamental Physics Prize (2012).

VIII Workshop on String Field Theory and Related Aspects

From May 31 - June 3, the 8th edition of this international workshop took place at ICTP-SAIFR and included 22 seminars on string field theory and double field theory. The top researchers in these areas came from the USA, Argentina, England, Italy, Sweden, Germany, India, Japan, Israel and the Czech Republic to speak and collaborate with researchers from Brazil.

Workshop on Mathematical Physics

The Workshop on Mathematical Physics was held at ICTP-SAIFR from June 16 - 17 and brought together mathematicians and physicists to discuss topics of mutual interest. This interdisciplinary workshop was a satellite workshop of the 31st International Colloquium on Group Theoretical Methods in Physics held the following week in Rio de Janeiro.

Papos de Física

Papos de Fisica is a new outreach program of ICTP-SAIFR introducing current topics in theoretical physics to the general public in an informal setting. In the first session of this monthly program on June 16, Rogerio Rosenfeld (ICTP-SAIFR/IFT-UNESP) presented the seminar “The Dark Side of the Universe” where he discussed the concepts of dark matter and dark energy.

Joint DACAS/ICTP-SAIFR Workshop on Modeling of Urban Systems

This Workshop was held at ICTP-SAIFR from June 21 - 24 and was organized by R. Kraenkel from IFT-UNESP, D. Iossifova and U. Sengupta from the ESRC-funded Strategic Network Data and Cities Systems as Complex Adaptive Systems (DACAS) in Manchester. The event included talks and collaborative sessions on how DACAS can help to address the specific challenges of Brazil`s urban transformation.
